About Connally Counseling

All people deserve to live healthy and satisfying lives.

At Connally Counseling, our intention is to help clients find ways to increase insight, clarity, balance, and meaning. We are passionate about the intersection between psychotherapy, research, and contemplative mindfulness.

Connally Counseling was founded in 2013 by Dr. Dalton Connally, who saw a deep need for affirming, queer-specific therapy in Ann Arbor and across Michigan, at a time when LGBTQIA+ services were nearly impossible to find.

Dr. Connally opened Connally Counseling to change that, creating a space where marginalized, neurodivergent, and queer folks—as well as their allies—could receive care grounded in authenticity, safety, and understanding.

From the very beginning, the response was overwhelming. Clients came through hospital referrals and community word-of-mouth, drawn to a practice where they could finally see themselves reflected in their therapist and feel truly seen and heard. For many, that connection became more than a therapeutic relationship—it was a source of hope and belonging, and a reminder that queer people can build joyful, connected, and successful lives. Our team now includes therapists who are members and advocates of the LGBTQIA community, offering trauma-informed, culturally affirming, and inclusive care that honors each person’s identities, relationships, and lived experiences.

OUR GOAL

Our goal is to provide a comfortable environment for supporting clients on their journey to wellness and self-discovery.

With over twenty years of experience as licensed therapists, and teaching at a university level, we have an eclectic skill base. Our work includes helping clients release or integrate past traumatic experiences, abuse and history of depression.

OUR MISSION

To enhance and sustain the health and well-being of all persons with particular attention to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and kink communities.

We do this by providing mental health services and programs that create community; empower community members; provide essential resources; advocate for civil and human rights; and embrace, promote and support human diversity.

Our Principles as a Therapy Practice

The principles that guide the actions of Connally Counseling in the design and implementation of all agency services and programs, are:

“Connally Counseling is a wonderful community resource with a top notch staff. The staff members truly make this a safe, inclusive space, and I fully recommend them and their services!”

Anti-Racism Statement

At Connally Counseling, we vehemently condemn systemic racism and the profound impact it has on the mental health and well-being of individuals from marginalized communities. We recognize racism as a traumatic experience that inflicts profound harm, affecting one's sense of self, safety, and belonging. As therapists committed to providing compassionate care, we acknowledge the urgent need to address and dismantle the structures of oppression that perpetuate these injustices.

The intersectionality of race, ethnicity, sexuality, and other marginalized identities shapes a complex landscape where individuals face compounded challenges. We understand the unique struggles faced by people of color within the LGBTQIA community and the layered impact of discrimination on their mental health. Our commitment to anti-racism extends beyond words—it is woven into the fabric of our practice. We prioritize creating a therapeutic space that is inclusive, safe, and affirming for individuals of diverse racial and cultural backgrounds. We actively work to challenge biases, dismantle systemic barriers, and foster a culture of respect, empathy, and understanding.

We are dedicated to ongoing education, self-reflection, and advocacy, recognizing that anti-racism is essential in providing effective mental health care. By addressing the impact of racism on mental health, we strive to empower individuals, promote healing, and create pathways toward resilience and growth. We recognize that at this time, Connally Counseling is a group practice composed of mostly white clinicians. We consciously acknowledge this reality and aim to hold it in perspective as we practice our commitment to anti-racism. As white clinicians, we recognize that there are life experiences we will never personally understand due to the real harm and disparity generated by global forces of colonialism, marginalization, and oppression. As a group practice, we strive to utilize the resources and education we access to continue building our clinical competency and humility so that we may offer solidarity with communities in their fight toward emotional, mental, and spiritual healing and liberation.

At Connally Counseling, we stand in solidarity with those affected by racism, committed to promoting equity, justice, and holistic well-being for all. Our aim is to contribute to a world where mental health care is a catalyst for healing and empowerment.
